The honest version: most surveillance jobs are NOT trailer jobs. The single biggest mistake we see is people putting a camera trailer where a permanent install would be cheaper and easier.

A trailer is the wrong answer when:

  • The site has reliable AC power and Ethernet drops. Mount the cameras, run PoE, done. A fixed install at that point is a fraction of the trailer cost.
  • The deployment is permanent. After 18 months, a trailer’s cumulative cost (depreciation, batteries, cellular) crosses the line where fixed becomes cheaper.
  • The deployment is under a week. National rental vendors price daily; their daily rate beats our quote at that scale, and you don’t want to pay for setup-and-teardown labor we’d charge for a weeklong gig.
  • The site is fully indoor. Trailers are designed for outdoor weatherproofing. A traditional fixed install with PoE cameras is what indoor needs.

We say no to about a third of the camera trailer inquiries we get because a fixed install is the better answer. That’s the BMN stance: tell you the truth, even when it costs us a sale.

The platform stack is named hardware, not vendor magic.

Trailer chassis

We work with a local Texas fabricator on dual-axle chassis with locking trailer hitch, hardened cabinet for the NVR and cellular gear, and anti-tip outriggers. Texas-built, rated for 90 mile-per-hour winds (which matters when storm season hits). The trailer itself is theft-attractive, so we bolt it down where we can and add GPS tracking to every unit.

Cameras

For sites that are part of a larger BMN-managed UniFi network, we install Ubiquiti UniFi Protect cameras: AI Pro PTZ, AI 360 (fisheye), and the AI Theta combo for sites needing both wide and zoom. The AI Pro line catches license plates at construction-site entries and people-vs-vehicle at the perimeter without monthly per-camera fees, which is unusual in this space.

For higher-channel-count installs that benefit from analytics-grade processing, we install Hanwha Wisenet (formerly Samsung) or Hikvision-compatible cameras. Hanwha’s DeepInView line has been our pick for sites where the camera trailer is part of a larger surveillance network; the analytics are stronger and the management UI is cleaner for technicians who don’t live in the system every day.

NVR

UniFi UNVR Pro (16 cameras, 8 drive bays) for typical SMB scale. Hanwha XRN series for higher channel counts. Both record locally first, with optional cloud backup for sites where local theft of the trailer is a real risk.

Cellular

Cradlepoint or Peplink failover-capable cellular gateways. Verizon LTE primary, AT&T LTE backup, with 5G where it’s available. Single-carrier setups die when that one carrier has an outage; we spec dual-carrier by default. For really critical sites, we also offer Starlink as a third uplink, which has rescued more than one storm-recovery deployment when both LTE carriers were down.

Solar plus battery

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery banks, sized to ride out 3 to 5 days of cloud cover at full duty cycle. Solar capacity is the most underspecified component in cheap trailer kits we get called to replace. A trailer that throttles cameras to 4 frames per second when the sun goes for a day might as well be off.

Generator backup

Propane-fueled, not diesel. Quieter for events. More thermally stable in Texas summers (where diesel can have starting issues at 105+ degrees). Auto-starts when battery drops below 30 percent, auto-shuts off when battery’s back to 80 percent.

The boring specs that actually matter: solar, cellular, storage

This is where most camera trailer purchases go wrong, and it’s where the BMN spec is unflashy but right.

Solar capacity should be sized to ride out the worst-case 5 days of Central Texas cloud cover at full camera duty cycle. The math: 4 cameras at 1080p / 30 fps continuous recording draws roughly 60 watts; the LiFePO4 bank should hold 1,000 watt-hours of usable capacity per camera-day; the panel array should recharge that within 6 hours of full sun. We’ve had storm seasons where Hewitt sites went 4 days without meaningful recharge; the trailer kept running because the bank was sized correctly.

Cellular needs to be dual-carrier from day one. Single-carrier failover is theatrical: if Verizon goes down at a Waco site, AT&T usually doesn’t. We’ve measured fleet-wide recording uptime at 99.4 percent, which only works because every trailer has both. The cost of the second carrier modem is roughly $30 a month per trailer; the cost of a single recording gap during a theft incident is the entire investigation.

Storage: continuous 4-camera recording at 1080p / 30 fps for 14 days needs about 8 terabytes. Many vendor kits ship 2 terabytes. By day 4 they’re rotating, which means the recording an investigator needs is gone before the investigator gets the call. Our default is 8 terabytes, with 16 terabytes available for sites that need a 30-day window for insurance documentation.

License plate read (LPR): we add it on every trailer parked at a construction-site entry or storage-yard gate. Post-event investigations live and die on plate reads. The cameras that do this best in our installs are the UniFi AI Pro PTZ and the Hanwha PNV-A9081LR. LPR adds about $400 to a site spec; it’s the single most-requested feature in post-incident phone calls.

AI features worth the spend, and the ones that aren’t

This is the part of the industry that’s mostly vendor marketing. We have opinions.

Worth the spend:

  • Line-crossing detection. Did the truck cross the loading-bay line at 3am? This is an actual signal, not an alert about a moth on the lens.
  • Person-vs-vehicle classification. Filters out the wind-blown leaves at 2am, the raccoons, the deer crossing the lot. The signal-to-noise on motion alerts goes from 5 percent useful to 80 percent useful.
  • License-plate read. Already covered above.
  • Two-way audio (talk-down). Lets security ops or local PD speak through the trailer without dispatch. Has resolved at least three loitering incidents at our customer sites without a physical response.

Not worth the spend:

  • “AI scene understanding” or “behavior analytics dashboards.” Useful for the vendor’s marketing slides, useless for the SMB.
  • “AI-powered threat intelligence reports.” Boilerplate.
  • “Facial recognition.” Legally complicated, technically unreliable in trailer-mast camera-angle scenarios, and politically charged in ways most SMBs don’t want to deal with.

Three real deployments (anonymized)

A Hewitt commercial buildout, 9 months. General contractor on a multi-million-dollar buildout, two trailers: one at the entrance gate with LPR, one mid-site covering the equipment yard. Total deployment cost (rental, install, decommission): roughly 3 to 5 times less than the deterred theft and insurance-claim documentation value over the project lifecycle. Texas summer heat. NVR and cellular gear both have thermal envelopes. We spec everything to a 50 degree Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) operating temperature. Cheap kits we’ve replaced thermally-throttled at 40 degrees Celsius, which means the NVR was cutting frame rate during the exact months a trailer is most exposed.

Cellular coverage gaps. Rural Central Texas can lose Verizon and AT&T simultaneously during big storm cells. Starlink as a third uplink for critical sites adds about $150 a month and has rescued more than one deployment.

Trailer theft itself. The trailer is theft-attractive. We bolt down where we can, add GPS tracking on every unit, and recommend secondary locking on the wheel hubs at sites without other physical security. We’ve had zero trailer-thefts across 14 deployments since 2023; the deterrents work.
